What I can say about this issue again, follows next.
I can't tell anyone wether or not to remove the flaps. It is all up to the person who asks about it, if he is ready to take the risk or not. No one can say that someone's flaps WILL fail or they WON'T, because no one knows. I would say their probability to brake or last is 50/50 .
I can tell, that only way to be sure that they don't fail, is to remove them.
Everything has worked great after the removal, and it did not show up anyhow in the annual MOT test.
You can check it by yourself, does your car have them. Try to find a long metal rod under the intake manifold on the right side (when facing the car). See my DIY thread in the DIY section, or PM me.

How many car?s swirl flaps are broken? Many, but not that many. I would say the probability is a few percent.

I think the same way about the lotto; It's not 1 to a million probability that you win the jackpot, it's 50/50. You win it, or don't .

Thanks for your word of wisdom guys,
Your right, if they are not there then there is no cause for alarm. I think I will get a local garage/BM specialist to remove these and provide them with a copy of your DIY thread Antti.
Any idea of cost (in the UK? ...do not want to be ripped off!)
Why do these swirl flaps get caked in debris?
I thought the modern engine and use of fully synthetic oils would eliminate carbon/sludge deposits....or am I wrong all together. I know little about engines and apologies if it is a dumb question.
Regards
Kaz

Someone please correct me if i am wrong but I did read somewhere that when the engine is cold it will pass oil, this is supposed to happen to reduce cylinder wear during warm up. Anyway the oil residue is vented in to the intake through the crankcase breather via an oil separator filter (doesnt do a very good job IMHO), i understand that is why you get some oil in the intake.
Thinking about other diesels i have owned they have all had oil in the intake, you can see about a teaspoon of oil at the throttle body. The other cars were a 1999 Audi A6 2.5TDI and a Volvo D5.
Regarding the flaps, i still cant believe that BMW would have designed the intake with these in it. I have no regrets in ridding my car of them.

Options: Beige/cream leather, maple wood,Bi-xenons, PDC,heated seats......
The option to remove is OK if you know what to do and have ever done somethin with your car. For me I can't really manage oil/filter change so would have to get a specilaist to do it.
For now i have got a warranty put on for 400 quid which will cover swirls flaps and the like for engine up to cost of car.
b4 warranty runs out and if i don't want to renew i will think about taking them out...but they are the 4.5mm i guess my car is may04.
To take out or not...it really depends if you have a warranty or are prepared to risk engine failure. I was thinking of going for E Class 03(W211) which had issue of water getting into gear box from 02-04 cars and stayed away. i never thought E60 woul;d have also a skeleton in the closet.
