Swapped an 06 transmission in an 04 545i
A few weeks ago I had my automatic transmission from my 04 545i swapped out with a used transmission from an 06 550i. The car drives a lot better without slipping when downshifting. My understanding is on the 04 - 05 transmissions, there is a plastic part that wears out and warps over time and was updated to metal in the 06 transmissions.
When I was leaving the shop after the newer transmission was installed, my car had a check engine light. I had the shop hook up their computer and came back with this error:
4E86 - Solenoid valve 3 (interlock)
They cleared the code and said the transmission needed to adjust to my driving and to let them know if I have any problems. About a week ago, I purchased an OBDII scanner and plugged it in to make sure it worked for BMW's. The scanner then gave me this code:
P0979 - Shift solenoid "C" control circuit low
My question is, are these two codes the same and what do they mean? I'm not sure if a solenoid is bad or starting to go bad. Could it be from installing an 06 transmission and the car needs to be programmed to the newer transmission? If so, I need to get this fixed before the warranty runs up.

I would guess you do need some kind programing / coding of modules ect...Also could it be a pre existing condition of your new/ used tranny ?

Did you contact whomever installed the transmission to try and rectify the situation ? It sounds like a toss up between programming and the possibility of an issue with the new/used trans.

M4Yhemz.....
when you speak of the downshifting problem.
my car (04 530i) will hang when downshifting on the highway, from 4th to 5th or from 5th to 6th, but it is ESPECIALLY bad after i pass someone quickly and it is coming back from 4th to 6th when I let off the pedal.
it will moan as the tach falls VERY slowly as if it doesnt want to come out of 4th or it is expecting me to hit the gas again and wants that torque aval.
one time, and one time only, I actually got a muffled bang from it as it was trying to come out of 4th gear and relax back into 6th for general cruising. this was just after passing someone, and i had not completely let off of the pedal during its shift, just eased some.
do you think this is related????

HELP! I have had my BMW into 6 mechanics and none know what is wrong!
Its a 2005 545i. On the dashboard the different shifts (P,N,R,D) will blink on the screen. When its in park, the P blinks! Then the car will shove or slam as the screen blinks. then, once you get it driving it will slam sometimes and not slam other times. All the BMW mechanics say it needs a new transmission, and all the non-BMW official BMW mechanics say they think it is something else, but don't know what it is. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT THAT IS???
I have already replaced/resealed the valve body and that didn't help.

Welcome to the group.
Have any of these folks who have looked at your car hooked it up to a scanner and clerked for error codes. The transmission is controlled by a computer module.

They cleared the code and said the transmission needed to adjust to my driving and to let them know if I have any problems. About a week ago, I purchased an OBDII scanner and plugged it in to make sure it worked for BMW's. The scanner then gave me this code:
It is true that the computer must get use to your driving style which at times may cause shift changes to be slow or fast at times but it wont cause a fault code.
That would mean when ever a stranger drove a BMW fault codes would pop up and it just doesnt happen.
While I would give our car a little while to settle in, there seems to be a pre existing problem with a solenoid or valve body that may need fixing

4e86
I solved 4e86 by putting the old valve body in the new transmission. Most techs cant even reprogram the new tcm because they cant change the vin number. Only the dealer can do that. Try using the old mechatronic or valve body. Try to save your oil. It took me $300 in oil and 2 transmissions with the same code before i got it
