After filled up the gas tank this morning, I had hard time to start the car - long crank, no start. Finally, it caught and started. However, I noticed the value of "Miles to refill" was at about 511 mls. It dropped slowly to about 496 mls and then went back up to 511 mls again. This never happens before. Normally, after refill, I would get about 400 something and starts to drop during driving. Today is different, it never drops below 496 mls even the gas tank gauge needle is no long pointing to the "1" mark !!!!
Is this a instrument cluster issue or software issue ?? The gas gauge needle seems to work fine, pointing at the correct level after driving about 40 miles.
Any suggestion is appreciated.

Miles left before refill depends on CURRENT driving style...
Therfore it changes.
You might have been driving different right after the refill...

Does the e60 have a split gas tank, (like the e39) with a jet pump to draw gas from one side to the other with the fuel pump in it?
I had a problem with that syphon (jet) pump in my e39 and it sounds like your problem.

Same thing happened to me when I drove the car long distance. When I filled up after driving roughly 300 miles on the highway, it said I had 556 miles, when it usually says about 400ish. It all depends on the way you drive your car. It's completely normal.

Good to know that this is normal because my original warranty just expired :-( Don't want to see something break right after the warranty expired !!!
Thanks,

After driving the car for about 1 quarter tank of gas, the number was down to 305. So it did go down :-)
Thanks,

With my latest exhaust experiment, I've been driving the car much harder than usual. Previously when I filled the tank, I would get 425 total miles left.
After the hard driving and a full tank fill up, it read 350 total miles left.
So, as Iceman stated, the computer recalculates based on your driving habits.
