That sounds like a blast. I had an E30 325iS ('88) and it would have been much better with more ponies (and torques).

Indy wants to replace the entire HVAC system, Compressor, Condenser, Expansion Valve, Dryer......Is it necessary to replace everything???

With a compressor changeout, if the compressor had a Black Death experience, self destructed sending contamination downstream, replacing the condenser and expansion valve are just good preventive maintance. The drier is typically replaced whenever the system is opened for repairs, again as PM.

He did mention that if the oil is black he will have to replace the rest of the components too. However, his quote for the compressor was much higher than I found it to be at $900+. He wants to use original BMW compressor! I'm not sure if that is necessary.

Sounds like your Indie isn't really sure about the cause of the problem and wants to change everything just to make sure.
First he said that the compressor was fine, then maybe not! BTW, what oil is he talking about being black? Since the system works somewhat, then the compressor has not "fully destructed", therefore just replacing the compressor with a compatible one and replacing the dryer should do the trick.

My vote would be find a new Indy. If you are going to replace the compressor change the dryer. Anything else is up to you. If you replace the two the HVAC will be fine. Do you need to replace it with the original equipment, no. But wherever you get it from make sure they are reputable. You want it to last more than 6 months.

Thank you! I've been going to this guy for a while, and so far he has been good. I just think he is not an HVAC specialist, especially, since the problem is intermittent. I found an OEM Denso compressor for less than $500 at partsgeek, so that and the dryer will be replaced. So, not the expansion valve?

The expansion valve is up to you. No it's not required. The only time I would change it if it's not working. As long as the correct amount of oil is put in it will continue to operate as it should.
