It's actually fairly common for these compressors to fail sooner than normal, enough to where BMW published an SIB about it while the E60 was still in production. Mine has been working abnormally since I bought the car in 2012; I'm planning on replacing the compressor this summer when I get a chance.

What's a good price on the compressor? Bear in mind I'm a heart patient.

$452 at Partsgeek. OEM Denso Compressor.. Haven't checked the prices of the Expansion Valve and Dryer Filter yet. I'm guessing a total of $800 - $900 hole!

If the OEM price is an issue i can suggest a place I buy all my compressors from. I had a friend who was tight for cash and decided to buy one from the guy and it has been 4 years with no issues. I have done over 15 compressor changes and have bought all of them from him. I personally would not buy one to put in my BMW because it is just my preference not because I question the quality.
