Thumbs down

HI,

I posted earlier about the stearing crack noise which i have in my 545 2004 production. i also red somewhere about ours having similar problem.

but my story started when i first purchased the car, since day one i felt that there is cracking noise when ever i turn the stearing to max right or max left.

i took it to the dealer the first time, stayed there for 4 days, they called and said car is ready no problem in stearing....

the second time, i took it there and i insisted to have a technician from the dealer work shop to come with me in a ride and hear the noice by himself... this felow (technician) finally agreed that there is a noise and after i kept there (at the delaer place) for another 4 days, i was told that they changed the stearing Rack!!

however, the noise still exists but this time it is louder....

i raised my complained to the head of the maintenance department who promissed that he himself will take care of this problem....

so i gave it back to them and i was calling daily to the check the development. My car stayed at the dealer for one whole week, they informed me that they changed the front axe holder (if iam not mistaken) but still the noise exist!!!! they made a committy of engineers discussing what the cause could be still they could not isolate the problem or from where the noise is coming from....

before giving them the car for the lat time, i made arrangement to ship the car to me home country for my annual vacation and due to delay at the dealer i was obliged to take it from them yesterday after they informed that it is save to drive it. they also said that during my vacation they will open a case with BMW germany for them to exchange ideas...

can any one help me in this issue have somebody had the same problem

I have a similar problem.. I hear a thump each time i turn the steering wheel all the way in each direction... Sometimes i can hear it if i'm driving slowly in a parking lot and quickly moving the steering wheel left to right.

I have not yet taken it in to the dealership.. I am kind of making a list of problems. This way when the new software version comes out in September that plays MP3's, I will drop it all on them and have them upgrade me for free.

I am having the same problem in my 2004 545. I took the car back to the dealer 3 times and they can not dupicate the problem.

What is your car's mfg date? My car was build Mar. '04.

PS The problem is really annoying especially paying $65k for the car.

Don't bother calling BMW's customer relation number. They will do absolutely nothing for you. Except letting you vent.

Every car I've ever owned has made some sort of extra noise or vibration when the steering wheel is at max deflection either left or right.

any of you have rapid "clicking" on lock or unlock and/or when the car goes into sleep mode (about 10 mins after shut-down)?? If yes...that was the final sign my dealer needed as indication that my rack needed to be replaced
