My Ride: 2005 545i with everything
Manual shift--almost never. What's the point?

My Ride: 2005 BMW 330i Orient Blue exterior Beigh leather interior with Wood trim, Premium package, Steptronic auto, Xenon headlights.
I tend to use DS mode on my 530i and 330i about 33% of the time. Reason i say 33% of the time is because I feel most of the city driving I do has to much traffic to make great use for the transmission to hold the gears longer and Normal D seems smoother for City driving also.

You're kidding right? Hey if you like to row your own feel free but let's not pretend that you could drive a track lap any faster using the manual mode of your steptronic than you could in DS mode. And better gas mileage using manual mode? How do you figure that??

[/quote]You simply have more control in selecting the optimal gears on a track when using manual versus comfort. I am not pretending anything. How do I figure better gas mileage? I figure it by comparing the mileage I get using comfort versus the mileage I get using a combination of DS and manual--but mostly using manual. I get about 16.5 MPG using the combination and was unable to do nearly that well using comfort. Obviously, I am able to shift manually in a way that produces better gas mileage than comfort can do. But, that's not necessarily true for everyone.

For me, the mode is simply a question of driving economically or not even if the difference is not tremendous. The test I made was simple :
- For the same trip, I made twice in the same week with almost the same weather (no rain, approx the same wind conditions) and taking into account the same direction.
- I made the same calculation in both case : starting with a full tank (really full), I've done the first trip in D mode which is supposed to be the most economical and using a non agressive driving style, almost with cruise control all over the 400km of motorway and national roads. Then I refilled the tank at the same level, making my first calculation : nb of liter consumed x 100 / nb of km done. I obtained 7.8l/100km.
- I made the same trip three days later again starting with full tank and used exclusively the DS mode this time using also CC and the same type of driving. I obtained 8.2l/100km.
Last part of the test is less valid as my opinion: When I came back the second time, I used DS but driving in a punchy style and obtained almost 9l/100km.
The manual mode is as my opinion fully uninteresting as to be efficient, you have to shift the gear 1s before the time you really want the shift is made because the transmission cannot prepare itself without knowing when and even if you will shift. The only way I see a use of this is in specific conditions such as snow where you want to limit the drifts by forcing the car to shiftup. On this last point, it appears that the auto transmission can manage such conditions but I never experienced it yet.
