I have just mailed letters of complaint, by name, to the Managing Directors of ZF (UK) and BMW (UK).

I will keep you posted on any reply.

I'll watch with interest, mines been pretty bad this week, the trans seems like its lost its mind sometimes, it down shifts gear at low speed (upto about 40mph) when its not wanted or needed.

Hope the 3 day visit to the dealer improves things, based on the mountain of feedback I dont expect a fix

Since my update to ver 20 my shifts have been silky smooth. I had both the rare "slam" and the occassional hanging in too low a gear thing before that, but since the move to 20 I love the way it shifts.

It will probably take some time to get a direct response, but I am looking forward to it. I hope they don't simply tell me to take my car to my dealer for evaluation. Been there, done that, probably won't do it again. We all know they need to make some sort of software change or controller modification to fix this. So far, all I have received in response is this acknowledgement reply:

Thank you for your e-mail.

We have forwarded your request to the relevant department for assessment.

Kind Regards,
BMW Customer Service Team

The only way to mitigate the issue is to select DS which forces selection of 1st at low speeds, but be aware that you will feel harsher 2>1 shifts in traffic.
I hate to throw a wrench into your explanation but I have had the slam 2 times in the 6 months I have owned my 545i, and both times I was in DS mode. Interestingly I have started driving much more agressively (higher revs) in the last month and both slams have happened during this time with none in the first 5 months.

I seems that the "slam" becomes more of a problem once you start to drive harder. I never noticed any issue at all when I first had the car through the first 2000 miles, during this time i drove very softly. (break in period)

Anyhoo V20.01 seems to be a backwsrd step for me and a few others...hope you dont get bothered by the slam....

Probably true, but then we didn't buy a BMW so we could drive it like a little old lady in a Lexus.

I can report that I have suffered "transmission slam" on almost every manual car I've ever owned by slowing in second gear to a crawl and then hamfistedly mashing it into first whilst accelerating wildly.
This was cured largely by my ageing process and the ability to afford auto gearboxes.

I'm not belittling the problem people, but everything in perspective....
