I don't think so. The only problem is, that the signs (next to the shifter) are not correct anymore... But, hey, you know in whic direction you have to shift...

Not it's not! It's against the weight transfer law.

I've read a BMW article claiming this is the way F1 is - Acceleration causes you to pull back; deceleration causes you to push forward, hence their current logic.? Although I follow their logic, it is not for me.? So since I am the only driver I intend to change it soon.? Simple reversal of the control leads going into the connector on the shift lever.? Can?t do anything with the console markings as far as I know,? but as long as I?m driving who cares, right?

You guys are absolutely right. The weight transfer is why they do it that way on our cars and on race cars. I realize it seems odd at first but you do get used to it after some time. Just think of what it would feel like downshifting an SMG under heavy braking before a turn on a race track -- it makes perfect sense.

What doesn't make sense is the way M-B does it on their automatics -- they do a left/right thing, not a forward/backward thing. Makes no sense at all...

What would happen if you press both + and - together?

Actually to me, they are just making it different from others. All reasoning, logical or illogical, actually doesn't really matter.

So the step works in the same direction as SMG now? forward for downshift, back for upshift? If so, cool, because I am used to SMG and will be getting Steptronic soon

I just don't see the issue. They have made it work just like any manual. 1 = top left, 2 = pull back toward driver, 3 = push up and right, 4 = pull back toward driver... pretty simple if you ask me. Push forward = down shift, pull back = upshift. Directionally the moves are the same, just missing a bit side-to-side motion.

ks -- you've lost me. How does push forward always equal downshift and pull back always equal upshift when you equate it to a manual transmission?

In a manual, if I'm in first gear and want to upshift to second, I need to pull the lever back. If I'm in second and want to upshift to third, I need to push it forward. Obviously the same situation exists as you move up and down through the gears. Only in an SMG or a Steptronic will you be able to always upshift by pulling and always downshift by pushing...

*Phew* Glad I wasnt the only confused one...

I like how BMW has it set up now. I admit it was weird at first but its perfectly fine now. BUT now it screws me up when I go drive other cars

That's my problem too. My wifes Audi is the opposite. Not that it is right, but if I change anything it will have to be mine as she would probably "read" the +/- sign in her car and do it that way. Since I will be the ONLY driver of the 6er, I don't care if my +/- is reversed and I don't believe I'll have enough deceleration or acceleration to notice the fact that I am going against the laws of physics

Rudy, the only one lost in that thread was me, in my second bottle of wine at a really bad fund raiser. Please ignore my ramblings...
