Anyone know why BMW decided to change from pushing forward to change up and pull back to change down. It worked fine on the E39 why change it!

Apologies if this is a repeat topic! :bashwall:

I found that weird too! However I think up for up is actually more logical than down for up (if you get my meaning)

Not it's not! It's against the weight transfer law.

I've read a BMW article claiming this is the way F1 is - Acceleration causes you to pull back; deceleration causes you to push forward, hence their current logic. Although I follow their logic, it is not for me. So since I am the only driver I intend to change it soon. Simple reversal of the control leads going into the connector on the shift lever. Can?t do anything with the console markings as far as I know, but as long as I?m driving who cares, right?

Going from Audis Tiptronic I was afraid to ask the same question.
So BMW, why?

Weight transfer law aside, it is the same motion you would make in a manual car 1st towards the front, pull back for 2nd, push forward for 3rd, pull back for 4th etc. Seems natural to me, but this is my first BMW, so the change for those who had the E39 may be quite a change.

probably to be consistent now... my Step has + forward shift, - down shift, but SMG is forward shift down, and down shift UP... i know i'll be confused for the first week or so when i finally get SMG

If i remeber correctly, my 2002 E39 (530) w/ Step worked the current way - down is up and up is down. Differed from my friend 7'er from the same year.

My current SMG works the same way so it was an easy switch for me.

Since it's all electronic why can't they make the direction of shifting one of the options in I-drive so you can program it the way you want it?
