OK........I'm too lazy to walk out to the garage and get the manual out of the glove box...but.....in my 04 530 with Step, if I used the manual shift, whenever I came to a stop, the tranny would shift, or better, start off M2 regardless of the gear I was in when I stopped. Now, in my 07 550 Step, I notice that whatever the gear I'm in when I stop (when using manual shift), is the gear I start off in.....did something change here, or do I have a problem?

Really? You should be happy about it as I think when I put it in M mode I wanted some spirited driving and starting off in 2nd gear is certainly not spirited at all.

If I have been using manual shifting, then the my Step downshifts to M3 when coming to a stop. If I have been using auto shfiting in DS mode, then it downshifts to M1 when stopping.

In my 530i, when come to stop in manual mode, it downshifts to 2nd. In my 550i, it downshifts to 3rd.
How are you liking your 550? Maybe I'll see it next weekend!!

3rd??? DANG! 550 have that much power to start off in 3rd all the time? CRAZY! M5 should use 5th and 6th only.
I knew about it starting off in second... but 3rd?

I have a 545i and mine starts off in 3rd also when I use the manual shifter. But I can get it to start in M1 or M2 too, but in M4 stop,, it goes to M3 automatically when I start. I think that's normal unless a software update says otherwise.
My E39 535i would shift down to M3 (or would keep M2/M1 if selected). The E61 535d selects M2, even though it has more torque and 3rd gear is shorter as it has 6 gears rather than 5. Go figure.

Well, now that I am paying more attention....mine will go to M3 from a stop. In my 04 530 it was M2. At first I was thinking it was just like a manny in that when you stopped, it was in whatever gear you were in. And it has no trouble starting off in M3!! I do have a tendency, though, when in manual mode to start from second, and even first......I like to get off to a quick start!!
