How old a car? Sounds like moisture in your hydraulic fluid.

It's not really dumb.
I had the exact same noise issue and kept thinking it just needed some lubrication. Turns out one of the gears were rubbing too hard, hence the column had to be replaced. Luckily it was under warranty, so I didn't have to pay anything. Also, after the replace, progman had to be updated, becuse it would not adjust otherwise.
IMO, if I knew this was a issue with the gear on the column, I would get it fixed. No sense in waiting for a disaster to happen with the steering column. Just my 2 cents.

While my car was miles over the warranty period, my SA nice enough to go ahead and replaced the steering column out of goodwill. It resolved the noise issue when the steering wheel tilts up/down. Otherwise, it would've been $$$ to repair.

Mine did the same thing and the dealership replaced the entire steering column. I was only about 200 miles under 50,000 so I got it just before my warranty expired...and I got a new A/C compressor on that visit too!
