My 530i is from July 2003 and is reasonably well equipped. Among others, the steering wheel can be adjusted electrically and on memory. However, despite the manual discussing adjustment up and down as well as towards the driver and away, there is no adjustment possible in the length direction. Is this normal?

What is the difference in the "towards the driver and away" and the "length direction?" I don't understand.
Maybe The Shrike have smoked something? (sorry)

I'm pretty sure it should work. So you're saying when you move the adjuster forward and backward (towards the front and rear of the car) nothing happens? Are you also saying that when you move the adjuster up and down (toward the floor or roof of the car) the wheel does, in fact, move up and down?

The steering wheel can go up and down (i.e. tilt function, i.e. steering colomn becomes steeper and v.v. flatter) , but it can not move in the length direction of the car (i.e. telescope i.e. come closer to my body or move away from my body).

So if you move the telescope adjuster, the wheel just sits there? If the wheel tilts but doesn't telescope, unless there's some country specific thing going on, I'm thinking something is wrong with your car...

the disturbing/confusing thing is that the arrows on the little knob also only point up and down, where as the manual shows a knob with 4 arows. So maybe this is not standard, but I would just like this confirmed.
