Haha you know what... a 1999 Camry that I had before had the same problem too.. it was slightly off center it was turned to the left a little when i was pointing straight. Maybe it was a Year 1999 problem.
Actually my IS had the same problem too... maybe it's just Toyota... Did you buy your BMW from Toyota? Both times I didnt do anything about it till the first service and they fixed it then.
it not just Toyota.
I have it on my 3 week old Honda Stepwgn, I will let them fix it in my 1st service at 5000km.
The sale person say this is common on most Honda car when new on the road.

Sometimes when steering is not centered, it is because of the "crown" of the road which is for good drainage when it rains. Almost impossible to get a perfect center for all roads as the angle of the road surface for different roads are different and maybe different across countries. Tyre rotation can give rise to this problem as well. As long as the car does not pull to one side on a straight road is good enough for me. I can live with a steering wheel that is slightly off centered. Especially with steering wheel airbags, centering no longer means just simply removing the steering wheel, correcting it and putting it back. Now it involves adjusting the tie rods (?) undercarriage (not sure if this will cause wheel alignment to be out).
