Default Steering module failed - HELP!

Hi all.

2007 530D LCI

Couple of weeks ago I did the following work
  • Disconnect battery
  • Change engine mounts
  • Disconnect steering column from rack and push up and out of the way (after I disconnected the battery I had to move the steering column by pushing on the front wheel to get spanner access to a bolt).
  • Remove turbo for a look over (bit low power but turbo seems OK)
  • Reassemble
  • Connect battery
  • Start

Since then I have active steering error - ISTA cannot communicate (much) with the AL module.
ISTA can sort of talk to the module to read/clear codes but it cannot perform the steering motor angle calibration. Keeps saying communication not possible. I don't mean the steering angle sensor - that is OK.
Battery is tested and looks good.
So I have no DSC, active steering or ABS.

Anybody heard of this kind of thing happening.
Seems incredibly coincidental but I didn't disconnect any steering related plugs anywhere. Maybe raising the motor did something.

Completely at a loss - hoping not to remove module if I can help it.
