I have a 2007 550i (manual). I start the car, let it warm up for couple minutes and drive off. If i step on the gas, i get the following message on the dash.

Steering Malfunction
Possible hazard from fluid loss in steering or suspension hydraulic system.
Do not continue to drive

At that point, i pull over, restart the car and the message does not come up again. I'm concerned now because this message just started appearing more frequently. The temp in NY now is about 49 deg on average. What is the problem?

Did you check the fluid level? If it's marginally down, you'll get these messages. Issue of course would be WHY it was down - is something leaking, etc. Is your car still under warranty? Just bring it in and let them do what they need to do. My car needed to have pieces of the active sway bars replaced because they were leaking.

Take it in. I had a leaking Power Steering pump that was replaced under CPO along with several hoses.

I have not checked the fluid levels yet. My car is no longer under warranty. And there are absolutely NO LEAKS.

I'll check the power steering level. But it seems to only happen when the outside temp is below 45 degrees in the morning.

If there are no visible leaks just go to the dealer and get a bottle of the chf-11(?) and top it off. You should be fine, colder temperatures seem to cause this for some if the level is marginal. I wasn't aware that I had a leak either so you might be okay for some time.

You guys are great!! i just checked the CHF level and it is very low!! That would also explain the weird noise i would sometimes hear when i turn slowly to a complete stop. I think topping off the levels will fix my problem.

Thanks again!!
