Steering angle sensor - where is it?
I have an 05 525i and I think the SZL might be bad as my adaptives won't work. Does anyone know where in the column this is?

if your SZL module or steering angle sensor is not functioning, you should get an error code. you can check, calibrate, and/or reset the sensor using ISTA software if you have it.
it looks like this:
NEW OEM Supplier Steering Angle Sensor V20720105 BMW 32306793632 | eBay
RealOEM.com - Part Search
it can be opened and cleaned and this is sometimes the problem but you should get an error code if this is the case.

Do you know what error code should pop up if it's bad or needs a cleaning? My AHL won't work and I get these 2 errors:
ERROR E51A no message (yaw rate), receiver lm, transmitter DSC
ERROR E51D no message (steering angle), receiver lm, transmitter SZL/DSC
Not sure if its the SZL or DSC that's bad or not. MY steering wheel can never get fully straight either no matter how many times I bring it in to the shop to get it aligned, not sure if that has anything to do with it either...

ah, well why didnt you say that in the beginning?
did you recently do something with the light module "LM"? your errors seem to indicate that the LM is not receiving the proper signals, which is probably why your AHL lights arent working properly.
have you seen this post? someone had the same codes after swapping out the LM.

another possibility is that your steering angle sensor is dirty. inside the sensor, there is an optical disc that can get dirty. i had some SZL codes and was able to clean the optical disc with isopropyl alcohol and all was resolved. there are quite a few posts about how to disassemble the steering column and access the SZL

I actually did modify my LM unit to the LM2 module, but I've had this issue even before I changed the light module. I've read that post, but I can't find where that separate AHL control module in that PDF article in that post says. Unless I have to take the whole glove compartment apart to access that module? Is it possible to just code out that module and have it just read straight from the LM2 module? That article seems like a lot of work and a lot of things could potentially go wrong.
And okay, I will have to do some searching. It may just be dirty, as I don't have that triangle and no other codes come up about the SZL.

Okay yeah, I don't have that so I guess it's good. But what could have caused my AHL to stop working, even prior to me changing out the LM module? I thought that was the issue, that's why I changed it to the LM2, then I find out doing that creates more problems. I like the features of the LM2, but I'd also like my adaptives to work. Is there any other way to get them to work without having to do all that work and wire cutting like in that other post you linked above?
Also, what could be causing my steering wheel to never be able to get fully straight whenever I take it in for an alignment?
