Hi all, i was wondering has any one had an issue on this matter. yesterday i was on my way to my office and all of a sudden a light came on on my dash and also in my hud. it stated stability module drive moderately and go to your closes dealer. so thats what i did. i turned off my car and one of the service writers came out, but the fault was gone. the emblem on the dash looked like the emblem when you turn off your traction control. the service writer told me if it comes on and stays on to bring it in. as i was leaving my office late last night it came on again, so this morning while i was bring it to the dealer i brought my car from it came on again. i was at the dealer for a couple of hours before they told that there computer that they was using to diag. my car was not working and since they started with this computer they have to finish with it. at around 3:30 pm i received a call tekking me my car is ready so i proceeded to go pick it up. after reading the work order it stated that they could not find anything wrong with the car. said to myself what hell and proceeded to leave the dealership when all of a sudden the light came on, i then stopped the car and went back into the dealership to tell my service writer that the light is on again and she explained that they even test drove the car for 15 to 20 min. with no problem indicated. the mechanic that worked on my car came out and saw the light on and said that they have to contact BMW about this problem, so once again i do not have my car. my 550i only has 3600 miles on and i brought last dec. its a 2007. if anyone could please shine some light on this issue for me that would be great. sorry for the long rant.

Yep, I had the same thing happen to mine. But my SA ordered a new part for me, but since I had the heated steering wheel that part was harder to get...long story short, it took 2.5 weeks for me to get my car back. Thanks to my SA and dealer had a loaner the whole time, even switched out loaners (from X3 to 525Ci). If its the same problem the part is on the steering column.

Your dealer could be missing a simple fix here. This happened to me and it was remedied by topping off the power steering fluid. The power steering pump is also used to drive the ARS (active roll stabilization) which is part of stability control. My fluid level was on the edge of low and when it was cold it would set of the warning. If this is actually what is wrong, then I would find another dealer for service, since this should have been the very first thing they checked. I think it is even mentioned somewhere in the Owner's Manual.

I had both the "soft" symptom that gwf545 experienced and a real sensor problem that did leave a fault in the system so they could find and replace a "lateral motion" sensor. Back about 2 winters ago I got the intermittant fault and after getting back to home area the dealer found the ARS hydraulic fluid low doing a thorough inspection. More recently while driving very aggressive on the Tail of the Dragon I was getting intermittant warnings again. My forst thought was fluid again. However, after getting home to Florida (no more alerts) I scheduled a routine appoinment and listed this as something they should look at. On my way to the approinment, 8 miles out from the dealer my FTM came on. I stopped and checked all pressures and they ware all perfect. Dealer found a fault and said the sensor they found bad could also have given me the false FTM as well. Been perfect ever since then.
