Who owns an LCI with white bars moving? I allowed for a difference between LCI diesel cars and LCI petrol cars.

Just to set the record straight: the poll was Rudy's suggestion.
I've had the feeling that this is a design change rather than a software glitch.

... but it's still with the M5, isn't it?

The M cars have a variable redline (not a variable white line) which is indicated by LED's on the tach. (I'm not 100% sure but I think that the rev limiter also varies with the LED's.)

I doubt they removed that feature from the M cars...

Boukehj,

Does it say anything in your manual about this?

You learn something everyday, until I started reading these posts about the moving white bars in the tachometer I didn't even realise that they did move as the engine warmed up! I made a point of looking this morning and yes, they do move. It's a rather primitive arrangement though and similar to the 'econometer' in that you don't actually get any really useful information from it!!

What makes this board work is the variety of opinion.

IMHO it's far from primitive and directly related to the maximum recommended revs as the engine warms up.

Far more useful that a blue light than goes out or "C/N/H" or even an actual temperature (whatever that would mean).

By primitive, I meant the operation - it's just a card with white markings on that rotates behind the tachometer - hardly hi-tech IMHO. As for the information it provides - does it really tell me it's safe to run my engine 1,000 revs higher than when cold within 5 minutes of my driving the car in the morning. And finally, how does a moving card with white bars on it even indicate that my engine might have started to overheat? I'd rather have a basic water temperature guage than the rather dubious econometer.

If it would be taken off, it should be replaced with cooling wather-, engine oil- and gearbox oil temp -meters.

The AC/heating systems gives you warm or cold when it's ready to do so and the white stripes tells you not to top rev.

If the engine is overheated a warning light will indicate that.

I'm happy.
