Sqwauk/grind after start
Hi there - I've got a 2010 535xi and on occasion, and only when cold starting it'll make a grinding type noise right after starting - kind of like if you try and start an already running car with a normal turn-key ignition.
I've scoured forums for this - but can't find much. Don't think its vanos, is it?

That's a bummer . . .
It starts strong and the raspy noise is only every once in a while.
Oh well - the starter is much easier than the fly wheel . . . I guess when the starter is out I can check the fly wheel teeth
Anyone have this happen to them?

I would order from pelican or make sure you get a Bosch. You wont have it immediately but at least you know you are getting quality.

Thanks - Bosch is it
Going to try this myself and try not to start it too many times until the new starter arrives.
Sounds like from the top and debate is out on whether or not to remove manifold or not.
Starter, bolts, anything else i should change while I'm in there?
Again, thanks for your help!

You will want to remove the intake manifold because it makes it a lot easier. Also remove the inlet air filter box and duct work. You need to replace the starter mounting bolts. They are aluminum and are prone to breaking. They only cost $10 for the set. You don't need to replace the intake manifold bolts because they are not torque to yield bolts and are under very little load. Replace the intake manifold gasket, it is only another $20 or less. If you have the money to spare replace the crankcase ventilation hoses and canister since you are working that area.
Hi there,
does anybody have a link or to do DIY starter replacement/manifold removal?
I found one that had pictures of the entire process a week ago or so, but can't find it again. There's a thread on 5series.net that's good and offered advice, but no images. The pelican DIY is for 530 - any difference with the turbo.
This is the N52 engine, right?
I have access to a lift - what is the best way to get it out? from top or bottom or combination of the two?
thanks,
dave
