I was just missing the fabulous steering wheel from my E39 sport. I absolutely love my 2004 545 (sport package/automatic), but I realized that the steering wheel just does not comapre. It is too thin (no heating), is too big, is not covered in leather, and does not have the bumps at 10 and 2. I have seen a couple of M steering wheels on EBAY without airbags and was wondering if it is possible to upgrade. My questions are, 1 can I use my existing airbag? 2 Would the car have to be reprogrammed? How much frustation and $$$ would the dealership inflict? This is probably the one thing that I am prepared to spend some good money on. If anyone is looking to sell one. please let me know. Thanks in advance

You can upgrade and many people have done it. You cannot reuse your current airbag because its a different shape. If you are planning to upgrade your steering and you have an AUTO then you may want to consider the one with the SMG paddles and then give my530i a call and get his Paddle Shift kit.

I'll get on that - any idea on price? Would you ever consider getting something from EBAY?

What car, year you got because 03 to05 is 1 Sport Steering Wheel and 06+ is a other Sport Steering Wheel.
A 06 Sport Steering Wheel will not fit a 03 to 05 car.
There are 2 types of Sport Steering Wheel. M and just sport which I have+ peddle shift too.

you will not beable to use the old airbag. Need to get a new 1 which is a diffrent shape (round)
I got my Sport Steering Wheel with peddle shift and round airbage from ebay so itis OK

pinguhk, do you mind sharing which ebay-er you bought yours from? Since you had no issues with the seller or steering wheel, I'm thinking it's a safer bet to go through them again...
