I've read all the threads on all the sites trying to get info on the Sport Automatic tranny and there is no consensus. Some believe it will have a double clutch and others think just a torque converter and software tweek. I tend to believe that it's a totally new transmission since they would not list the weight in the 08 brochure. Whether it's a double clutch or a next generation automatic I don't know. I can't get any info out of my dealer or BMW NA. It's frustrating b/c I want the Sport Automatic and am willing to wait if it's a new transmission but not if its a tweeked Steptronic.

Also, can anyone confirm or deny this: my dealer told me that the ordering system won't even accept orders with the Sport Automatic tranny yet. I thought I read that someone that ordered one was scheduled for week 24 production and early June ED. I think my sales guy just wants his commission sooner.

I was at the pre-show event at the NY Auto Show that was hosted by BMWNA. I asked the question about the Sports Auto and he said it was a torque converter based auto matic transmission that shifted faster that the SMG or Steptronic. He would not go further into the design.
I think that if it was just a software change they would not have to wait until June, and keep in mind the cost is not just $500- its $1250 plus $500 or $1750 for this transmission because the base Steptronic is now included in the increased price of the 2008 cars.

Your version sounds better but right now until we see something official, these are all versions and any one or part of one could be true.

It's not my version. It's BMW's version quoted verbatim. You may notice I gave the reference.

Of course we could always dismantle one and check with our own eyes.

BTW the writeup is about the new auto box and NOT the SAT (so I apologise for being off topic...)... but I can't see the SAT using an entirely different technology - not at $150 markup.
