Found this one on the motor-talk.de forum:

Sound is not like you'd expect from a diesel, nice though.

So, what do the americans think of it?

You do not have the 535d do you?

Gone are the days of noisy diesels, now they sound nice, go very fast, and mpg is superb. Want an engine with everything, then buy a diesel.

Compared to a V8, it's rubbish. But it works. You can't have everything, but at least it's cheaper to run.

Has better performance on the track compared the the v8 tho, mpg is miles better. I can understand the sound not being as good, but a small price to pay.

Agree again, but from the inside it's a lot better.

And you forget one thing: Diesels are not as popular as V8 engines among thieves.

I remember a story from a stolen/joyridden ford Sierra 2.3D left in a field somewhere with a note on the windshield saying: we DON'T do diesels.

It's been a long time since the Sierra 2.3D and Diesels improved more than a bit over the years. And the sound of a V8 or even V10 makes my heartrate go up faster than my 535d.

I still like it a lot more than the sound of my 4 cilinder MB i had before.

I like it and believe it beats the standard BMW mufflered 545. Now the BB, Remus, SuperSprint, Borla, et al, is a different story.

Nice presentation,garehaan! Tks vm.
I wonder if anybody had opportunity to compare the sound of 530D and 535D. Though my 530D is certainly by a great margin better than previous engines, when I am out of the car I can still hear typical diesel's tact.

I don't believe that we can get rid off that tact completey ever. Pressure rise in cylinder is that quick and pressures over all are higher than in petrol engine.

Exhaust voise is different than mine (530d) because I don't have particle filter and that way little different system.

Talking about sound, does anyone have sport pipes in their diesels?
I was just wondering that what kind of a sound could we have from diesel?

Think it can't be anything like from petrol engines I6 / V8 / V10, but it would be nice to have that six-cylinder talk with little (lot) more authority...

And one other thing. Last sunday I did 240 in speedo and there was still little bit of juice left. But the strange thing was that my and my friend's ears got "locked".

Don't know how to say it in English, but in Finland we say "locked". It's a pressure thing with your ears... Strange phenomena, probably I was going to break the sound barrier or something....
