Getting my windshield replaced due to a spreading crack, my insurance company gave me the option of getting solar coated glass, and I went with this. Did some research but havent found much. Anyone know the purpose and benefits of having this solar coated glass?

I assume it protects the uv rays from cracking your dashboard. On that note, I recently had my windshield replaced. I found out that my OEM windshield supposedly is pinkish due to the some coating. At least that's what the guy from Safelite told me. Had to wait for them to order the the windshield from the dealer using my VIN.

BTW, for the Safelite installer. He did a great job.

I know little about them, but you might want to bear in mind that some of these windshields also render radar/laser detectors and toll transponders (I-Pass, EZ-Pass, etc.) ineffective. If that's not a concern, it's probably worthwhile, as it would presumably keep your interior a bit cooler and protect it from UV deterioration.

factory ones usually have a little area by the mirror for you to mount transponders. Our E65 has the solar windshield and it's pretty obvious where the non-covered area is. the windshield does have a pinkish tint to it from certain angles.

I used 60% ceramic tint instead to get the same effect since I don't need a new windshield and ceramics don't interfere with transponders.

+1 for safelite. Thats where I got my windshield done. Hour n a half, in and out, they even vacuum your carpet and clean your windows

Theres an apparent area right behind the mirror that isnt colored, id assume thats for the radar detectors.
