hi all,
i read somewhere in the forum that if you have a car with a sat nav, then you cant simply drag and drop mp3 files on a dvd and play it in the dvd slot !
that's for the old models, BUT, if you do a software update would that allow the car to play such files in both the dvd and cd slots (playing them after simply drag and dropping them on the cd and dvd NOT by making an audio cd)
i phoned my dealer and he said, that's 160 to do, and he also said he wouldn't guarantee that the update will allow the playing of (the mentioned above)
first question, has anyone done the update and got the result i'm expecting?
second, do u think its worth it? or there are alternatives? (cheaper alternatives)

Please provide more info, I see you're in the UK but what year is your car and do you have navigation. for US cars software update can enable MP3 playback if it was built after march 2004 ( i believe that was the date) its an old issue now so I dont remember all the details. BUT the dealer also has to specifically PICK the mp3 option... they cannot just update the software and expect it to work.
In the us if you had Navigation which was your "professional navigation" then it would work. your "business navigation" did not.

2006 525d msport pro nav 6 cd changer and slot for extra cd
i asked the dealer and he said that he never came across this case of allowing mp3 files to be played, and he ALSO SAID that some of you guys on e60 forum know better than himself !
so, he said he will update the software but he can't guarantee that it will allow that mp3 playing

I have a 2004 525D SE (50% msport now) without nav but with CD changer, i removed my changer and fitted the BMW Ipod kit. They updated my software to August 2006 to enable the ipod kit, with your car being a 2006 i am surprised that it isnt already enabled?

its not one of those cars with a key, it has the fob ...
by the way, do u think the ipod kit is worth it? howmuch did u pay ur dealer to do it for u?

I just tried an MP3 CD in mine but it didn't work. However, I've just found a SIB on another forum that mentions that for cars produced before 09/05, extra programming is required. So maybe yours will be OK.
