My new E60 due next month will have this feature as part of the 'Luxury Package', which includes Dakota Leather, Electric Memory Seats & Wood Trim. I wouldn't have paid for it as a 'stand alone' option, but I am really glad the car will have it.
Like an earlier members post, my wife and children are completely incapable of closing the doors 'first time' and every entry into the vehicle is met with 'tuts' and comments like "this stupid car - mine never does this".
A few days ago I found an E60 with it in my local dealership and had a 'play'. It's great! Just pull the door closed without effort and as soon as it makes contact, the electric motors take over and the door closes for you. You can also close the door 'normally' and the motors still kick in, pulling the door in slightly more than it's final resting position and then it settles back, ensuring all the closing mechanisms are engaged. In addition to being a good convenience and safety feature. it gets top marks for being 'cool' as well!
Whilst I can understand that certain features don't make it to the US due to the ltigious culture there, I can't see how this feature could be remotely dangerous. The mechanism only starts to operate when the door is sufficiently closed that the gap is too small for fingers etc.
One criticism though. It should be extended to include the boot (trunk) lid as well. Typical BMW penny pinching!

My Ride: 2008 BMW 550i Sport
Carbon Black Metallic/Cream Beige
Manny tranny and other stuff
Recently gone, but never forgotten:
2005 Ford Mustang GT (hence the name)
Torch Red/Crimson
Manny tranny and every option available for that year
2002 Chrysler 300M Special
Brilliant Black/Light Taupe/Dark Slate
Autostick and goo-gobs of neat features that I will sorely miss
Remembering about the slamming of doors, on the previously mentioned Caddy; no matter how hard you slammed the doors/trunk, they would stop about a half inch opened and then the motors would take over.

My Ride: 2008 Sapphire Black on Black M5 - loaded sans soft close doors
I just don't understand why anyone would want this on their M5? It adds weight and let's be honest, if you need soft close doors on a car like the M5, something is wrong. I'm very glad it is an option, I'm not so happy that all the dealers here in Chicago include it when they order a M5 for stock.
