My winter set up:
18" BBS RK's with Michelin Pilot Alpin 225/45 18".
Light and strong wheel. Never got stuck last year.

Choice between 17" and 18" is based off the amount of snow you expect and how much dry pavement performance you are willing to sacrifice. I got 18 " Mille Miglia (5-spoke) and Dunlop Wintersports from Tirerack.com. I see you are in Chicago. With the relatively flat MidWest (I'm in MI) and the reasonable snowfall in Chicago, I personally would go with 18" (for dry perfromance and good looks). If I were in New England or MN I might go with 17".
In terms of sensors - no need for them as tire pressure is through the ABS.
