SMG shifter travel sensor broken!
#1
So today I brought my 545 SMG to mechanic and he told me that Shifter travel sensor doesn't work
That's why I couldn't shift it from 1st to N to start it. Does anyone experienced that problem? Is it expensive? I'm out of waranaty

1. are they sure its the Shifter travel sensor? What made them think it was that?
2. What year is your car? Location? I guess location doesnt matter... but year is important... please go update your signature and lists some specs about your car for better assistance.
3. if you have a early SMG it can be the hydraulic pumps failing and not having enough pressure to engage the clutch to shift out of gear into neutral.
4. It can also be the brake sensor not detecting that you have your foot on the brake so it wont shift out of gear. Check your brake lights... are they on when you are trying to get the car out of gear?

My Ride: 04' 545i SMG , Oriental Blue, Congiac Leather Interior, Nav., Park Assist, Logic 7, Sports Pkg, Cross drilled slotted rotors, ceramic pads, SS Brake lines, free flow air filter and a supercharger (coming soon)etc.....all the good stuff
An educated guess....I would say somewhere in the area of $1 - 1,500.
I could be totally wrong, and I hope I am for that matter.
Best bet call the dealer and ask to speak to a service manager, and tell him the situation and you what a ball park figure of how much it's might cost.
They should be able to help you out with that.
Best of luck, keep us posted
