I received my car, after a week of being in the shop, for the 'transmission fault error' message.? It turns out that the aftermarket LED light bulbs that I had for the stop lights were causing the error for the SMG.? The service advisor (SA) said that the SMG control module was on the same circuit as the rear stop lights!? Well, it was very confusing and weird on why BMW would do this but, they replaced my LED bulbs with the factory bulbs and it seems to have cured the problem.? This is a hard one to swallow.

Also, they must of upgraded my firmware because the shifting of the SMG is silky smooth with no jerkiness that it had before.? Definately an improvement.

Your thoughts.
Wow... what the Brake lights are tied to the SMG control module? What about other stuff? like the headllights, high beams, or fogs?

Ya.. .after i got 16.x upgrade the SMG shifts were MUCH smoother also.

I second that. Smooth as butter, in normal setting.

Also, keep in mind that here in S.California, you MUST have purchased your car from the same dealership that is servicing you car in order to receive a loaner car free of charge.? If not, you will HAVE to pay for a rental car.? I thought this was ridiculous.

That is purely dealer dependent...I get free loaners all the time from the dealer who services my car and I definately didn't buy the car from them.

Oh, 2200 miles on the 2005 545i and the SMG is just fine...and fun!

Hi Folks,

I plan to order the SMG option when they start taking 550i orders. I drove a 530i with SMG at the dealer and had a blast! I've been driving a 328i manual for the last 7 years -- SMG just makes driving that much more fun!

Quick observation on the "To SMG, or not to SMG" feedback thus far:
1) Looks like there are more 530i's experiencing the SMG problem.
2) Looks like 2005 model year has fewer incidences (Of course this may just be due to fewer of them out on the road than 2004).

I'm not a statistician, but would like to *believe* that BMW is making improvements on the SMG.

For those of you with SMG -- May the force be with you. Don't care what I've heard thus far. All I know is that driving with SMG was awesome, and that I want an E60 equipped with SMG!
