SMG owners - is your car jerky when it disengages

I don't have that problem at all. I also don't think shifting to neutral is a good idea because you're putting yourself in a potentially dangerous position in case you need to quickly accelerate to avoid an accident (say someone's about to rear-end you, etc.)

The delay it would take for you to apply the brake, shift back into 1st and accelerate would probably be way too long...

I don't have that issue. Am I reading your post right that you are down shifting into 1st gear? You should not down shifting into 1st the lowest while moving is 2nd. You should only downshift into 1st when you come to a complete stop.

But the car shifts down to 1st by itself and its very jerky every time. I can't change that.

Where does it say that? Some of us have (especially me) have found very good results doing exactly the opposite of what you say...

My driving instructor told me than 21 years ago. And it was valid for all FIATs, since you could get 1st gear in without major grinding only when the car was at a complete stop....

My car stops smooth as butter. No jerking.

Take yours to the dealer.... something is wrong with it.
