I picked up my 545i with a new transmission today. Car feels fantastic! This is the best the car has felt in a long time, and since the last SMG problem 6 months ago.

I'm hoping this is the beginning of a super phase II!

I had the same thing, got stuck four times. They replaced things but replacing the transmission did the trick.

I am wondering, in cases like this where something major was replaced, like the transmission, does BMW NA extend one's warranty period? I would assume at least for the transmission, right?

No, but I don't think it was an actual transmission problem. The SMG transmission is the same Borg Warner T5-6 that normal manual cars have but there is a Hydro-Electrical robotic shifting actuation on the SMG cars. From the lay drivers viewpoint its a Sequential Manual Gearbox but in reality its a modified H-pattern shift actuation. I think it is within this mechanism that the failures have occured.
The new M5 has a true sequential transmission, as does my Kawasaki Ninja, so the shifting movements are much simpler.
