I had spoken to a BMW development engineer (former schoolmate of mine) during my visit to Germany a couple of weeks ago and he suggested that SMG is indeed dead for all cars except the 3 series and the M models. It simply didn't sell...

I think one of the mistakes with the SMG was the fact that they even offered the automatic mode at all. Too many people think it's a substitute for the Steptronic so they end up deciding that SMG sucks...

I heard BMW was working on a transmission similar to the Audi DSG. It may be the case that they will introduce it soon as a replacement for the SMG in the 5 Series.

Interesting! If you check the BMWUSA Website and build a 550, you will find SMG as an option. This may not mean anything, but maybe it does.

I fail to see how BMW can discontinue the SMG option on the E60 when they have been pushing the technology so much. They were claiming how it will be the only tranny avaliable in the M5 then they back down and decide to make a US only manual option. The management needs to take one road and follow it. I believe SMG is the future and many more will soon adapt. If the SMG wasn't a big sell they should have enough to continue to make it a option and have enough to fill orders. Those who want it will just have to wait a little longer
If you go to the BMWUSA site the SMG is still a option so maybe their is another problem going on Could it be that the current non M5 SMG can't handle the torque of the new 550i and they are working on making it stronger?

The rumor of SMG's demise is still just that, a rumor, but keep in mind that I don't think that BMW is talking about cutting it out next week. It's still available on the BMWUSA site because it's still currently available. If they end up yanking the option, I'm betting it will be at a model year change...

Dinan Performance Software 384hp & 421 ft/lbs.
I was an early adopter and waited specifically for the SMG. Mine was one of the first ones built. I had one major problem, wherein they had to replace the transmission, actually I got the car back today.
I love the SMG and I think it really differentiates BMW from the competition. I hope we don't lose it as I am planning for a 550 SMG in 18 months when my lease is up.

I had mine replaced too a while ago and I did detect the new tranny was a bit looser than the factory installed one. It wasn't as "drum tight", but no issues since the replacement.

speedracerF4i, Feels the same really. My problem was that the car would not go into neutral, but everything else worked. I just got it a few hours ago. Normally it took about a week for the non-starting to re-occur. I will post back if everything is alright or not.
