Ya theres a "automatic function" but either way but dont bother with the Automode... think of it as non-existant... tahts better... use it only when you really really need to. It doesnt shift all that great.

But you get a better looking steering wheel with SMG.

Yep. The automatic mode is mroe likely a safety feature. It shifts before you blow the engine. And that means it shifts late and hard.

The rev-limiter is the safety feature -- you can't blow the engine even with a traditional manual (except with a bad downshift.) With the SMG, there's no way to blow the engine -- the auto mode is there most likely because they thought it would help sell the idea of the SMG.

I remember reading a quote from some BMW executive who said he thought it was a mistake to offer the auto mode with the SMG since many people expect it to work like a slush-box automatic...

I disagree.. <_< When I am stuck in traffic, and starts to read the magazine while driving, I really appreciate the car shifts by itself. I need that extra hand to hold my pages up

I know unfortunately, you Germans don't get to do that

Well if you do it, the first hit brings you right back to this site...

The first three hits with Clusty were BMW sites. All hits on the first page were relevant. I didn't go to the second page.

All you need is one hand on the wheel to shift the thing -- automatic mode makes me carsick!

Sorry Rudy, but one hand is holding onto the magazine and the other one is for holding onto the 7-Eleven Super Big-Gulp soda. No time to f**k around w/ the shifter dude
