Ya theres a "automatic function" but either way but dont bother with the Automode... think of it as non-existant... tahts better... use it only when you really really need to. It doesnt shift all that great.
But you get a better looking steering wheel with SMG.

The rev-limiter is the safety feature -- you can't blow the engine even with a traditional manual (except with a bad downshift.) With the SMG, there's no way to blow the engine -- the auto mode is there most likely because they thought it would help sell the idea of the SMG.
I remember reading a quote from some BMW executive who said he thought it was a mistake to offer the auto mode with the SMG since many people expect it to work like a slush-box automatic...
