Yea, I agree...Whats up with the SMG bashing from non SMG owners...IMHO you shouldnt even be posting under this thread if you do not currently have an SMG. I have had all three gear boxes and think the SMG is the best. If you dont own one, how can you have an opinion
Original post was about people who have or have driven SMG.

I have driven E60 M5 and I didn't like the box - in my opinion, gearchange was way
too rough. That influenced my next purchase, current E60 550i Steptronic.

Why is SMG the best ?
Ever heard of DSG ?
Ever driven or have been in a car with DSG gearbox ?

This is a forum hence I don't see why people get excited about this matter, it is very subjective topic.
If SMG or any other box was superior to others - in short time span we would see demise of other(s), be that a stick, steptronic or SMG. Clearly, that's not the case - in other words, no gearbox is perfect and that is why BMW has 3 different types on offer, for different drivers and driving styles.

Saying all this - if you lived any closer, I'd invite you to local track and smoke your SMG with my "automatic box" :-)

The topic of this thread doesnt ask about DSG. I have never driven DSG for more than a few minutes, so I cant comment. You cant have a true opinion about SMG, unless you have driven beyond a test drive..PERIOD..Were do you live, I would love to meet you and see who smokes who...

Some reason when the topic of SMG comes up, SMG owners always have to defend their choice of transmission. I thought that the SMG tranny shines at the track and that the Step is best for straight line acceleration? Hence if two 550s went against one another at the track, the 550 SMG should win with everything else being equal.

It looks like everyone defends there choice, wether its auto, smg or manual. I feel compelled to defend SMG because it always gets a bad rap from people who dont have it. I dont bash any of them. In the end its personal choice.

Man I hope I have not missed a great conversation/discussion!!

I would definitelly agree on personal choice, my only isssue is that most people just do not understand what SMG really is and a lot of people generalize. I will just say that you need to drive it for at least 500 or 1k miles for you to realize what SMG really is.....

Having said this the feel is why I chose it, and would definitelly do it again !!

However, drivers are not the same

Recently, on Porsche Track Day (in my part of the world) I ended up being 1st out of 45 cars - my Carrera S Cup (Manual) was faster than many 997 Turbos. If anyone queries this I can take few photos of trophy etc. Therefore, I might be competent to discuss matters when it comes to track and racing. I will not repeat this again - SMG is 0.1 sec faster than Steptronic (BMW info). I am prepared to take that chance and bet my pennies on.......erm, me.

You're right. A lot of the time, regardless of everything else it boils down to driver skills. Sounds like you're a pretty good driver to me.
