hard to prove one way or the other. its not a good thing, that is for certain. the noise you hear is energy being dissipated by the impact of one metal surface smacking into another. just like dropping a coin onto a table, the energy of the falling coin gets converted into a tiny amount of heat and sound.

+1 Change your oil to OEM first then tell us if issue is still present. MANY people had lifter/compression issues resolved by switching to OEM oil...it's cheaper anyway.
+1 Check mechatronics sleeve
Clean your MAFS as well and check your air filter/s as well. This all has an impact trust me.
Hell could even be your VANOS seals.
Do you have any error codes? Sounds like a vacuum issue.

nope, no error codes. i might be overreacting on the shaking issue, but regardless the car is about to have the transmission serviced (fluid, filter, sleeve..)
i'm going to go ahead and switch oils though and see what happens

OP - Sorry not to answer your Q about lifters. I cannot give you a definite answer. Yes it could lead to a bigger issue eventually if its not resolvable by using OEM oil. However, i feel that your issue is related to oil right now. Lifters aside......you have a separate issue with the 'vibrations' ....have you checked motor and tranny mounts? I wouldn't say it's premature wear at 103K miles but they usually go for a little longer. Check them out, it may be your issue.

06 530i, this bad boy has 103k
Lifters are ticking, not just when it's cold. My question is, will this eventually lead to a bigger problem? Also, has anyone experienced a slight "jolt" when coming to a complete stop then idle? This slight vibration comes almost every other time when I stop at a redlight. Nothing crazy, just a subtle shake, then everything's ok.
