Bastards. Go get 'em. 6 BMWs from them? They can't treat you like that.
I am going to replace the battery first. It keeps a charge, but at 5 years it may be the culprit.

$550 for a battery at the dealer? Come on...

murphys law at its finest.
I though Murphy was Irish!
Maybe he found a new home in Bavaria...

In any case, as the saying goes; He was an optimist!"

I used to have a buck of a few hundred pages of Murphy's Lay corollaries.
It holds up in most disciplines and cultures.

Too bad Occam's Razor does not trump Murphy's Lay

I would call another dealer and ask their opinion.
It is too bad BMWNA and BMW AG do not inspect and monitor the quality of dealer service.

I know that the dealers are selling fewer cars at lower margins due to the economy, and I am sure the service departments are pressured by management to make money for the dealership, but for the ultimate driving experience, the car actually has to run.

Porsche seems to understand this in a way that BMW does not...

BMWNA has a local regional manager that covers each territory. I'd suggest you tell the dealership GM that you want the meeting to be with him and the BMWNA regional manager. When my 550i was playing up, it took the involvement of the regional manager to get the resolution I wanted and I'd recommend that approach here. As others have said, there is a goodwill program, but you may need the BMWNA rep to get involved to make it happen.

Good luck.

Now that sounds like an effective approach to the OP's problem.

Sorry to hear that, man
what a timing, huh?

I recommend you to purchase extended warranty for peace of mind + future incidents.
Think it as a protection/insurance for your asset
(I got in an accident one day after I raised my insurance deductible)

I have 2004 e60, too

we have cars that are 5 yrs old....and sooner or later, these Ultimate Driving Machines will be eating up our money for maintenance.

It's not only BMW, but maintenance of any luxury brands will cost you an arm and legs.....especially at dealers.
(i heard MB dealers are worse)

I definitely recommend calling BMW NA and having them work with your dealership. I was recently in the same situation, the dealership originally wanted almost 7500 for a new transmission and installation. After a few calls and complaints to BMW NA, the dealership offered to install the transmission for free if I buy the transmission from BMW, BMW NA would cover $1000 of the new transmission.

Wow!

You have my dream car in the right color.

I am thinking of trading up for another Porsche.

Even though your BMW is 5-6 years old, you would expect certain parts to last a bit longer than 50K miles --- but the sad case is that they don't; every BMW model has its known weak points. And, alas, repair, out of warranty, is very expensive.

You should continue to ask BMWNA for some good-will consideration - it sometimes will get you a break.

Of course if you're already in debate with this dealer, if you can't make amends you might try to establish a better working relationship with another. In reality, they don't make 'em but sell and service cars. It's far better when all parties try to work toward a mutually acceptable solution. When one or more parties aren't in concert it's darned difficult if not impossible.

BTW, threatening to switch marques may not be the greatest or most effective tactic but you should always keep an open mind and both eyes open too. The "L" brand isn't without it's warts but it's a pretty OK collection of cars.

Good luck getting your current problems worked out and what ever decision you make on keeping or switching.

Well, I am sufficiently pissed off at BMW to see what $60k will buy in competing products. Road and Track rates the new Cadillac over the M5 (cover story this month), but I don't like the styling, and I am not old enough to think of myself in a Caddy. And although I was tempted to buy the new Lexus IS F after a wonderful test drive weekend, I don't know if I am ready to go over to that side yet.

Thanks!
