Thanks, so this bulletin does not apply to the 550i, right?
No, the other way around -it does apply to the 550.

Thanks doug:

I must be being dense. How do you figure it from:

"E60 (5 Series) 545i, E63 and E64 (6 Series) 645Ci and 645CiC, E65 and E66 (7 Series) 745i and 745Li, E53 (X5) 4.4i and 4.8is equipped with N62 engine."

In this regard, cobradav says:

"So this bulletin is for the 4.8L engine in the chassis identified and not the e53 4.8L engine which has a different code."

I guess I still am confused.

Maybe I am confused but this seems to apply only to the 4.8L in the X5 - not to the 4.8L in the 550i. Otherwise I expect the bulletin would have been more clear???

That's more or less what I think. cobradav's full reply was:

"N62 = 4.4L
N62TU = 4.8L

So this bulletin is for the 4.8L engine in the chassis identified and not the e53 4.8L engine which has a different code."

I think that what he said is consistent with what we said. cd, where are you?

Further research shows:

Both the 4.4L and 4.8L engine in the X5 (E53) are engine code N62

The other chassis with V8s (E60/E63/E64/E65/E66) are N62 for 4.4L and N62TU.

Not sure of reason.

Part numbers end in A for X5 for both the 4.4 and 4.8

Part numbers in in A for ONLY the 4.4L and end in "B" for 4.8L engine

As I review service bulletins (SIBs), BMW is very careful to include specific configurations indicating unique tranny/engine combos that are impacted. For example one had specific 4.4L engine with ONLY a Step tranny, another was for a 4.4L problem with either Step or SMG, and so on. One series even had unique SIBs for X5 fix, 7 Series fix and then a 5 and 6 series fix all for the same engine.

AND it could also be becease of teh ability to fix this with CIP 20.xx which may indicate it was software in the DME or related that does not appear on the N62 equipped X5.

So back to this bulletin:

5, 6, and 7 series with 4.8L engine (x50) with any possible tranny combo is what they are including in this SIB

Whoa! This all is over my bow--if you know what I mean. Where did x50 slip in? But, anyway, the point is that 550i's are covered by the service bulletin, right.
