Can anyone help me sort out this/identify engine noise. I was sat in a traffic jam few days ago and heard a loud whirly grinding noise coming from the engine. This has now happened twice and BMW said they could not find any problems. Can anyone give me any advice on this.

If you were stationary in traffic in hot weather it was possibly either the cooling fan working extra hard or possibly even the belts on the air con screeching a bit as the load strain on them increased. Without good airflow it doesn't take long for the engine bay to get very hot.
It's advisable to always leave a reasonable gap in heavy stationary traffic between yourself and the car in front to give your own engine as much "clean" air as possible to prevent undue strain on the cooling system. I marvel at the number of people who sit bumper to bumper then wonder why their engine overheats.
