My game plan is to get a refreshed 5 er with the largest diesel that BMW will offer in the US, probably the 535d. My biggest challenge will be the availaiblity of diesel fuel in the Chicago area. I am committed to buying a car that is better for the environment.
Diesel may emit lower CO2 and have lower consumption but it's hardly an environment life-line...

I agree completely, however it is moving in the right direction. I consider it a fine start. Hopefully this in some very small way will help diesels will catch on in the US. It is embarassing that the US is such an obese consumer of our planet's precious resources. In the eyes of our truly dumb president global warming does not exist. Hopefully the new democratic congress and senate will change course. Hopefully more citizens of the US will act to address global warming on their local level.
However, the UK government seems to have picked on CO2 as a great way to extract unfair tax from motorists... It really is more complicated than that!
