I hate to say this, but I hope the hurricanes brought some smartness to all SUV (and other gas sluggling car) owners.
The new BMW diesels with particlefilters are a energy (oil) saving answer to less pollution.
My Jeep Grand Cherokee gets better milage than a 545.
It's not all about milage! Of course mileage is a factor but hey a ford focus 1,6 with all the exhaust removen (incl catalytic) gets better mileage than a 545i and for sure polutes way more.
And yes...impossible if u ask me, that a cherokee gets better mileage than a 545.

True. All the big car companies have to concentrate on alternative energy solutions. And people have to change their mentality over pollution and how much can we pollute.

Well, nothing bad with that

Trouble is though it's not an area where you get much reasonable debate. For example, I understand that it takes more oil (I have read 20 to 25%) to manufacture a gallon of diesel than a gallon of gas, plus the manufacturing process itself for diesel creates more greenhouse gasses than for gasoline. Is that ever factored in to the fuel efficiency and pollution debate? I'm sure we're all hoping for pollution reduction and energy benefits but let's not think that we're saving the planet because we drive a diesel.

My family hauler is a bloated gas guzzling Lincoln Navigator. Personally it does not matter to me if gas is $2.00 per gallon or $5.00 per gallon, The price difference to me is not a lifestyle change. I will continue to drive it until soemthing better comes along in this size- no minivan for me.
What I would like to see, is for those unsafe drivers who drive their SUV's like they are sports cars or simply doe not pay attention (putting on make-up/yelling at kids in the back seat, etc.) and pose a serious hazard get rid of their SUV or stay off the road period because they cannot afford to fill up their tank.
For me until something better comes along I will haul the family in my gax guzzler which gets an amazing 11 MPG.
