Bit concerned about this. Driving home tonight my car just on it own seem to drop gear and the revs hit 5500 rpm for about 10 seconds. Not sure exactly what happened - I was just poodling along and next I can hear the engine growling - I didnt kick down on the accelerator or anything silly like that. It happened over a small downhill patch in the road.
Have you guys experienced anything like this ? Also given I am in my running in period (car has only done about 150 miles) could I have damaged it at all ?

Got to be it, my E39 does that whenever I go downhill. So when I got my E60 I go real slow on downhill in order not to over rev during the break in period.

Ok thanks - at leat there was nothing wrong with the car.
Any opinions about engine damage? Even though its in the running in period 5500 rpm for a few seconds should be ok right ?

Those break in rules are guidelines, the engine will be better in the long run if you follow their recommendations but then again, if you follow all the procedures during the break in period then you work mostly above 4500 rpm after breaking in, your engine wouldn't last long right? So a few seconds at 5500 rpm wouldn't do much harm I suppose so don't get too caught up about it.
