As for the "hard shoulder being the most dangerous place to be", I can't help thinking that's a little exagerated. I don't think "people are often killed there" is particularly accurate!
Further to my last post, I have just found out that over 170 deaths and serious injuries occur each year in the UK alone on motorway hard shoulders - Source The AA.

I rest my case (rather than rest in peace as anyone without runflats might!)

I can see your point, but I am not asking BMW to abolish RFT just make it option. People who wants RFT can go ahead gets them while I don't and shouldn't penalize for having to buy an extra set of non-RFT cause I like sport package on my 535i.

You sound try to convince the rest of the world to switch to RFT on the other hand.

BTW, there are 1 million deaths in the world from malaria every year so should I sleep under the mosquito net in summer???

I sometimes think that your replies are in the school of 'everyone is entitled to my opinion'! The great thing about a democracy is that we are all free to express our views and are free to make a choice in most things - including run flats or non-runflats!
Jeez chill out. Whether you read, take any notice of, or reply to any of my opinions is a free choice which everybody has. When people ask for an opinion they (usually) want to see both sides of the story. Having owned three E60's, two with RFs and one without, I would NEVER go back. Many people who have made the switch will repeat this statement. BMW is an executive sport saloon, the ultimate driving machine. I would buy a Mercedes or Volvo if I wanted a motorised arm chair built like a tank. I wanted a Ferrari but occasionally need more than one passenger, and couldn't warrant the hideous service and fuel costs, so bought what I consider a good compromise. I'm also fat so probably wouldn't fit in a Ferrari.

If my E60 were to get a puncture I would pull over and call BMW assist who would come and change it for me whilst I sat on the safe side of the crash barrier. You only get blowouts if you don't look after your car / tyres or have a defect. 170 people a year - now tell me what % that is, taking in to account how many people drive on the roads every day multiplied by 365, I think you'll find it's a pretty low percentage, much lower than people who for example die by being hit by a drunk driver at night time. So - should we all stop driving at night? How about we just stop driving altogether and stay at home. But then we might be killed by a gas explosion, have you seen how many people die each year from those? I expect out of these 170, many were just broken down and not suffering a blowout, so drop the % even more. In realistic terms, maybe 10 drivers/passengers killed as a direct result of having non-runflats? That's good enough odds for me.

I also appreciate that many people are stuck with runflats but cannot afford to change tyres to proper ones, so feel they have to defend and stick up for their inferior rubber so they don't feel so bad.

(PS, I'm J O K I N G - no need to dig out stats and get all worked up!).

at the time i bought my car (see sig) only ONE E60 came without runflats - the sub SE 520d, the base car - unless i missed something
Our 530d was 2006 from the UK, there were plenty of non-RF options. As _standard_ I expect most wheels were RF's. If you upgraded to more expensive wheels, it changed to non-RF. We got RF on the 2006 530d, but out of choice not force.

Wow, if I knew that my question would cause all of this arguing I wouldn't have asked it!

If anyone's interested, I found a used Bridgestone run flat that matched mine perfectly with about the same tread left on it for $45.00 installed.

I'm going to wait until I need all 4 tires and then switch to non RF's (probably the Michelin PS2's) after reading all of your valuable advice. Perhaps I can find a good deal on a set of 19" or 20" wheels and tires and sell my set of 124's at the time.

Thanks for all the help!

Rick

Lol - at least you didn't say "Should I get RFs or non-RFs, and should I get diesel or petrol, manual or auto?"
