The leading finnish car magazine "Tuulilasi" tested winter RF tires.
Nokian Hakkapeliitta 4 Run Flat and ContiWinterWiking 2 SSR.
The comparison tire was the non RF Nokian H4.
The car used in the test was a BMW E90.

The tires held up to 200 km's of driving without pressure with some
difficulties in the end.
The Continental was the better tire.

But the RF tires weighted 1,5 times more than the non RF's!
The RF's have a thick steal rim witch still needs developing.

The idea of alu rims in the first palce was the readucing of non suspended weight!

That's why many of us on the Forum do not like Run Flats;
They just spoil the comfort and driving pleasure of the E60.

But if you do not have a spare (get a filling bottle) and cannot/dare
to change tire in the rare case of on puncture, go for the RF's.

The RF's are a real safty bumper when you drive on the Autobahn at +200 km/h.

But I have not driven my car exceeding 170 km/h and that only for a while.

The top speed limit in the summer overhere is 120 km/h so my normal cruise
speed on the freeway is about 140 km/h - no need for RF's.

The last puncture I had was in ... 1981...

Seeing at Top Gear how the car drives after a tire (or 4 for that matter) is blown, made me think about speeds I've driven on autobahn... So I choose safety. However I WILL buy a spare wheel kit and I will try non-RF. If not on my car, on my associate's...

Anyway, I drive a 5er to be confortable. But I value more my life.

No, I have not driven non-RF... I have my winter tires now (17" - RF) and my partner chose for winter 16" non-RF. I've taken his 530d for a spin and while I felt it is more soft, I cannot say I like it better. I will try again. Anyway, I thought maybe it is primarily the difference between 16" and 17"...

That's a fair statement and the main consideration too.

I'm not sold on RFs any safer than non-RF at high speeds. I'll have to look but If you get a flat in the RF I think they don't recommend driving over 45mph...I could be wrong though. Also, most of the non RFs members are running are rated for high speeds (V and Z ratings) and tire companies are doing extensive testing to ensure minimum damage if a punture occurrs.

I think its a given though that no one wants to get a flat at high speeds.

With the 138 style wheels I originally had they had Bridgestone RF tyres, they are hard and uncomfortable particularly on poor UK roads. On the 116 Style wheels I now have I have the Dunlop RF tyres, to put it bluntly they are crap. BMW should wake up and smell the coffee most owners hate these tyres.

BMW should wake up and smell the coffee most owners hate these tyres.
BMW marketing thinks different. Their goal is to get new car buyers.
The first time I found out e60 is offering RFT, I think it's nice and I also think all lexury cars should come with it. Not until few hundred miles of driving on RFT that changed my mind.

Welll... with nowadys tires are hard to puntcure... it happend to me 2 times in 10 years...

Main problem with RFT is noise and vibration.. after 10.000km they get terrible... well, they are hard too, but this is less annoying for me.

Everybody know this, my simple question is: has anyone experinced for more then 45.000km a good set of RFT???

If not I?ll go for not-RFT ))))))))))))))))
