Hi all, have a 520d for the last year or so and have just noticed my first tyre problem. Durty big nail sticking into the tyre (not the sidewall), but it hasn't affected tyre pressure (yet). BMW recommend to replace the tyre rather than repair.

Does anyone in the Carlow/Laois area repair these? I tried a few places but they only replace.

Also, does anyone know if run flats can be covered on insurance? Even for an increased premium?

I know you can get speciality tyre insurance in the USA, but I haven't heard about it in Europe, and in your case, it's a little late now! Some Pirelli tyres CAN be repaired legally and with the OK from the factory. If you run Pirelli's, have a look at the website. In Britain, the problem is a legal rather than a practical one - the tyre is good, the repairs can be good, but no-one has done a type approval on a repaired runflat (only a "normal" repaired tyre). If you want to go down the repair route, phone around as there are places out there that will do a repair - it's the same process as a normal tyre.

When I had a puncture, I bit the bullet and replaced all the tyres with proper (non-RFT) ones. (Although 2 of my tyres were nearly due to be replaced anyway). Much has been said on this forum about the pro's and con's of RFT's. I am willing to put up with the inconvenience of having to possibly replace a flat tyre at the side of a (wet, muddy!) road (at night!) for the undoubtedly better, quieter ride, more choice of tyre when I do change, at about half the cost of an RFT.

Don't forget that if you have a full car and boot you'll also have to make an executive decision what to do with the duff tyre/wheel combo. IIRC it won't fit into the wheel well.

ABC,

True.
The wheel will fit into the well, it's just that the "floor" won't go down properly!
I would have to do some creative repacking, and maybe pile baggage on top of kids/dog. Well not the dog, anyway.
Otherwise; Moral dilemma, do you leave a wheel/baggage by the road, or one of your kids??? or both of your kids???
Hmmm. now there's an idea . . . . .

It should be o.k. if you patch it and plug it. Some places will, some won't. But, if you have not got much tread on the tires, you should probably just replace them with non-runflats. The ride improves substantially.

Hello Irishman,

Just joined forum tonight, was not expecting to make a contribution, but delighted to help a fellow Carlow Man !
Your best bet is to try Tom Geraghty Tyres in Waterford (Dave on 051 873777), very knowledgable and helpful.
I do not know if he can repair, but he is the man to ask and has the best selection/prices if you have to buy.

If you decide not to go with runflats you can get a complete spare wheel and jack kit from BMW for e270 (as i
did on my last E60 on 17"s from Joe Duffy BMW). This in fact will fit neatly and fully into the spare wheel well,
without the floor pushing up, but first you must remove the felt false floor and the four plastic inserts.

Best of luck.

For those of you that have RFT's - how is the ride?. I'm getting ready to order a 535xi and really like the 18"wheels compared to the 17"...but I have to get the RFT summer tires with the 18's. Are they too loud, how many miles can I expect to get out of them?
Thanks

Greetings. These tyre's can be plugged providing you changed the tyre when you first got your puncture and didn't drive around on them as some people do. Brady's in Arklow Co Wicklow will do this for you. If you have driven even a couple of miles on the runflat then you must replace the entire tyre as you would a standard tyre.

I had run flats before, i tried to repair it, not good, so i suggest replace tires, or if not get a whole new set of rims with tires. Maybe it's time to get new rims good excuses that was mine.
