Mine does not go away completely either. There are always about 3 lines above the red line. I think this is normal.

Same here. Mine always leaves 3-4 lines. I always wait a while even after the lines disappear before I get on it. I like to be sure that the oil is up to temperature as well. My old ride had separate oil and engine temp gauges. The engine would get up to operating temp well before the oil did. FWIW.

Also, the lines are not an indication of a rev limiter as noted in a previous post.
Think of it more as a "recommended" red line. If you floor it, you will experience the real rev limiter (while the engine is still cold). I haven't done it myself but I have seen it done before. :'(

When engine if fully warmed up, 3 white lines continue to be displayed on my car. From previous thread a few months ago this is normal. It appears different engine models have different number of lines displayed. Again from previous thread, most of the 530i's mentioned show 3 lines when warm.

3-4 when warm is normal.
They are just all gone when the engine is off.

Exactly. The rev limiter is fixed at the RED line. The variable WHITE lines are more of a warning. Nothing will stop you from exeeding the white bars -- no matter where they are or what the engine temperature is. That's why they are white and not red. Most tachs have some sort of warning marking approaching the red line. Think of the white bars as that mark. That's why they never completely go away -- normal operating temperature is when 4 white bars are visible (at least on the 545).

I show 2 lines when engine is warm. You can ***maybe*** just make out the 3rd line but it is mostly covered......

It's the electronic rev-limiter. The limit increases as your engine temperature increases... It's to better protect the engine whilst it's cold

Just curious - is this just an indicator which advises the driver not to exceed the RPM, or does the rev limiter actually prevent the engine from overreving based on engine temperature?
