This is happening to others (me included). My SA told me the little Roundel is not available separately and I've not pressed the issue to have a new key fob to replace mine. However, I did buy leather key fob covers on ebay to protect them both.

I've had mine in this since new so the dealer is not going to be able to argue the 'it came off in your pocket sir' excuse.

I have one of those Start Button style key fobs. There is no leather part, the roundel is on the Lock button on the 3 button fob.
Perhaps there is a terminology thing here?

My key is a black plastic 'block' that plugs into a recess on the steering housing. (used with a start button) Its got two silver buttons (doors and boot) and the roundel in the middle for locking. Its attached to a key ring, with a leather fob on it, with a metal plate containing a logo, another roundel and the name of my dealer.

I think you are talking of the 3 button key? Not the leather bit with the dealer logo?

Perhaps ive got two failure possibilities with my setup

If my roundel from my leather key ring fell off my dealer would replace the key ring in an instant. This is the roundel on the actual plastic 'block' that I'm missing.

Dear Mr Miranda

Thank you for your email.

I can advise that the BMW Roundel on the key fob is not covered by our warranty, as this is aesthetic damage and does not effect the working of the locking button.

I understand that you may be disappointed with my response, if you would like to discuss the matter further please contact our BMW Customer Service Support team on 0870 5050 160 or email customer.service@bmw.co.uk .

Yours sincerely

Bruce,

Thanks for sharing the response from BMW.

The letter from BMW doesn't close the door completely and advises you to contact the BMW CSST. Maybe you should post a poll on this forum to give them some data about how many e60 owners have experienced "aesthetic damage".

After all, IMHO if it weren't for something called aesthetics ... would more people drive "Brand X" instead of BMWs?

I FOUND IT

Was doing some gardening this evening before the weekend and guess what while sweeping up the driveway I found my roundel in perfect condition. Today hard work did pay off

That's great! Few things are better than finding a long lost article.

Curious ... how is it fastened? Some sticky adhesive?

I just got another email from BMW because I took the matter further with them. However because in the meantime I found my roundel I wont be doing anything more on this. But this email clearly shows that its not black and white.

------------------------------
Dear Mr Miranda

Thank you for your email dated April 3, 2008. I am sorry to learn that the BMW Roundel has fallen off your key fob and that you are unhappy that this item is not covered under warranty.

I can confirm that, as the key fob is subject to wear from general usage, replacement of this component would not be covered under the terms of the BMW Warranty Policy. External influences such as residual cleaning products left on hands can cause the adhesive to break down. I appreciate that you carry your key fob in a leather case, however, the fob will still be subjected to wear when it is in use.

In instances where a customer is experiencing an issue of this nature, we rely on our dealerships to carry out an inspection of the part in question. If, following this inspection, they find that a manufacturing related issue is present, as opposed to wear and tear, they have the means to contact BMW UK directly for further assistance.

In order for me to obtain further information regarding your complaint, could you please provide me with details of your local BMW Approved Dealership so that I can contact them directly and discuss this matter further.

I am sorry that you have had cause to write to us under these circumstances and I look forward to receiving this information from you.

Yours sincerely
