My Ride: 2006 550i Sport Package, Cold Weather Package, Premium Sound Package, Comfort Access, Xenon Headlights, Adaptive Headlight Control, Navigation System, Steptronic Transmission. Silver Gray Metallic with Gray Leather. Added Red rear reflectors. Swapped stock Style 124 wheels and Bridgestone run-flat tires for BMW Style 125 5-Double Spoke wheels, 8" x 19" front, 9.5" x 19" rear with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires, 245/40YR-19 front and 275/30YR-19 rear.
My 550i is going into the dealer next week for the "rough idle at cold start" issue. I hope I get at least the improved results indicated above. Maybe I will also see some improvement in the Steptronic shifting. That would be nice, too.

My Ride: 545i - ordered in January delivered April 21st! Black Sapphire Metallic, Black Dakota Leather, Anthracite Maple.
Try removing the charcoal air filter element. It seemed to fix my car - it idles lower and smoother.

I left my '06 550i with the dealer while I was away for nearly two weeks. They were to check the "rough idle at start-up" issue and resolve it, if possible. On my return I was informed of the following by the shop foreman:
Rough idle at start-up on the 550i is the result of lean burning engine to meet EPA requirements. The removal of air injection pump found on earlier models requires the leaner operation at start-up. It is like starting cold with no choke. The slightly higher idle speed is to be sure the engine does not die. CIP 23.xx does not address this issue. There may be a program change sometime early next year (2007) to address this issue. They compared my car's operation to that of other 550i cars on their lot and found mine to actually be better than some.
I am satisfied with the response I received and view the rough idle at start-up as a very minor issue. I can easily wait the 15 or so seconds required for the smooth idle and lower speed to be attained.

I dont think we have the same rough start issue. My car, when first started in the morning, rumbles, and knocks for about 10 secs, than everything is ok. The rset of the times that it is started, it has a higher idke speed for 10 secs than everything is normal. Im not concerned about the higher idle speed but the rumbling and knocking is not normal. My car is at the dealer as we speak to adress this issue for the second time. Just got a call that the software to fix this will not be available till december. BMWNA rep had contacted me after reading about my problem here, and told me to get progream 23, now the dealer tells me they spoke to him and 23 will not fix this. Is BMW serious with this crap, how many times will it take them to fix this....Leaving now to goto to the dealer, lets see what kind of crap they came up with this time.........

Sounds like BS to me. My 550 was perfectly smooth for about 4 weeks. I am sure the new cars they have on their lots have no idle issues. BTW I am 100% sure 7-series do not have this issue. Looks like BMW cut some corners to save money on V8 5-series. It is weird that when talking about my 3 month old car I use expressions like "when my car was new this and that was just fine..." sounds as if I am talking about 10 year old car.
