update: took the car out today after 5 months of storage and after a long drive down the gardiner expressway. the noise is gone and hasnt returned since. so i am now pretty sure that it was bad gas in the tank. no more detonation ping althought i still have a bout half a tank of gas. but i will let it run bone dry so i could get rid of as much as possible. car runs great. thnx for the replies

Dealer kept the car for 4 days, and tried everyday to reproduce the rough idle, but couldn't reproduce it. Funny part is that it hasn't happened since I got the car back.

it could have been dirty injectors as well. but its always like that. once you bring the car in for repair. the car runs perfect. lol good to hear that its gone.

I had the same problem with a rough idle at temp. got my spark plugs changed and now its all good! Going to run a bottle of dragon power next tank of gas and see how everything goes!

Past 50,000 miles you should do the following and you'll notice a huge diff I guarantee!!!!!

1) Clean fuel injectors through the BMW service. Its like $140.
2) Clean your MAF Sensor $5.99 spray can at AutoZone. (do it yourself)
3) Replace spark plugs with NGK Iridiums. Should cost about $250 including labor.
4) Check / replace your air filter with K&N or BMC filters.
5) Use only Shell V-Power gasoline!
6) Change your oil with BMW 5W-30 Full Synthetic every 5,000 miles.
7) Flush your A/T transmission fluid service at 60,000 miles, then at 90,000, then at 120,000, (every 2 yrs) etc. Costs $450 at a BMW dealership.
8) Inspect your hoses, make sure they are firm after the car is cold. If not, replace!
9) Flush brake fluid every 2 yrs.
10) Make sure your coolant isn't low, check every oil change.
11) Inspect your suspension's lower control arms after about 65k miles. Chances are you might need to replace them around 80k.
12) Check your valve cover gaskets for leaks! $900-$1000 job to replace/repair.

The only thing that we are at mercy with in regards to massive repair are the computer systems in the vehicle. No amount of maintenance can prevent a hardware / software failure. The only thing that can give you hope is that you have a garage.
