Hello

I have been seeing negative comments on the RFT's....since my 523i M sportpackage will arrive soon and the RFT come as standard, can people tell me what is so bad about these tires?

Appreciate your help

I switched from Dunlop RFT to Michelin PS2 and found that the ride changed signficantly. I'm not alone in making that assertion. AS Rudy said its about what important to you and tradeoffs. I found the ride on RFT not just noisy but stiff and it dulled the connection to the road which is one main reason why I buy BMW. In terms of tradeoffs -I've had one flat tire in more than 10 yrs and do not drive a lot of highway miles so experiencing a sub-par ride to protect myself from a rare event was not worth it to me.

I changed from runflats to 19" wheels with Michelin PS2's and the change was dramatic. I wasn't so much bothered by the harsh ride of the runflats as I had come from an e46 M3. What bothered me most was how numb the steering felt. I just didn't feel the road the way I was used to, and frankly this is one of the biggest attractions of BMW cars for me. The ride is definitely smoother with the Michelin's, and the overall steering feel and handling are significantly improved. And I do have a spare that came with the car.

Concerning the safety issue, I am only nervous at speeds over 110mph.

I will put my runflats back on when I sell this car.

I did notice that the 3 series is better with the runflats. But then the suspension was specifically designed for them, and BMW did a good job.

I initially had the Style 135 Rims with 18" 245/40 all round, run flat Dunlops (MSports Pack set up).

I then bought the Style 172 19" Rims with Michelin PS2 275/30 rear and 245/35 front.
The 19" with lower profile rubber gives a better and more forgiving ride than the 18" runflats.

See my post here:

I will not buy runflats again, until the manufacturers dramatically sort out the harsh ride.
Hello BMW#5,

Thank you so much for sharing the experience with me and everyone in the forum.

What a coincidence!!! The reason I have question about the RFT is that I am seriuosly thinking about replacing the 18in style 135 on my just-ordered 523i M package with style 172!!! And I have to say your car looks awesome!!!

My another question: Does your car feel heavier after having the 172? Since my is a 523i I am concerned whether this will make the car feel underpowered...

Thank you for the inputs again!!!

Hi Lawrence,

the car definitely does not feel heavier.

I am not sure if the 172 rims are heavier than the 135's. Even iif they are, this will probably be offset by losing the extra weight of the runflats.

If I recall correctly, the runflats are heavier.
